Coco Cay: tourist information
Originally named Little Stirrup Cay, this island getaway is located within the Berry Island chain of the Bahamas, about 50 miles from Nassau. This group of almost 130 islands and cays (pronounced "keys") has "private playground" written all over them. From pirate's hideouts to yachtsmen's havens, the Berry Islands have offered seclusion through the ages. Accordingly, many claim that "the Berrys" have one of the highest concentrations of millionaires in the world. We'll never really know for sure.
But we do know that this deserted island offers cruise passengers a secluded day in the sun free from hassles.
Hunt for the grave of the infamous pirate Edward Teach - you know him as Blackbeard the Pirate - in the remote areas of CocoCay. Whether this is actually the marauder's resting place is a matter of dispute. Or, grab a towel and head for the beach. Royal Caribbean provides the sand and towels, but you'll have to bring your own pail and shovel! Snorkeling and SCUBA diving are terrific here (there's a sunken airplane and a shipwrecked replica of Queen Anne's Revenge — Blackbeard's flagship that sunk off North Carolina in 1718). So are the beach activities of jet skiing, parasailing, or paddle boats. Once in a while, a seaplane makes a surprise visit to the island, offering guests a sky-high view of CocoCay. You won't starve on this island. Food can be had throughout the day at either of two pavilions. Both serve up the standard beach barbecue fare, but one offers an ocean vista, the other a view of the surrounding CocoCay village.
You won't lack for the basics, either. A series of small buildings offer everything from sunscreen to local crafts to t-shirts.
Ahoy matey, and pass the caviar!
