Oban: tourist information
Also known as ‘Rakiura’ (meaning glowing skies), Stewart Island is famous for it’s magnificent sunsets. With a population of only 390 people, Stewart Island is the ideal place to restore the soul and unwind from stressful lifestyles. It is easily accessible by passenger ferry from Bluff (an hour’s journey) or a short 20 minute plane flight from Invercargill.
The ‘laid back’ friendly locals are quick to welcome visitors and make your stay memorable. The township of Oban, on the shores of Halfmoon Bay, is the heart of the island and offers visitors a variety of accommodation, a General Store, cafes and the famous local hotel.
The beautiful beaches and crystal clear waters offer excellent fishing, diving, snorkeling and sea kayaking. Visitors can take a 1½ hour bus tour around the Island or explore the 20 kilometers of road by rental car, hired motor scooters or mountain bikes. Water taxis, chartered boat tours and glass bottom launches are also a popular mode of transport on Stewart Island.
There are a number of walks available on Stewart Island ranging from a 15 minute bush walk to a full 10 days of hiking around the Island. Tramping is the best way to explore this unspoilt paradise which is mainly covered by native bush, sand dunes and wetlands.
