Rosendal: tourist information
Surrounded by impressive mountains and beautiful scenery, Rosendal is the administration centre of Kvinnherad as well as a busy industry and shopping centre, including art galleries. The polar vessel Gjoa, belonging to the explorer Roald Amundsen, was built here. Boatbuilding is still an important industry.
The Barony Rosendal is the only one of its kind in Norway and thus among the greatest attractions in Western Norway. The castle, which was built by Ludvig Rosenkranz in 1665, is situated in a beautiful park from the 1850's, framed by majestic mountains and waterfalls. During the summer season there are several activities going on inside the Barony, such as carding and spinning in the Servants' Hall and baking in The Old Kitchen. In the Tea and Coffee Lounge you may taste delicious home made cakes. The Barony Rosendal has long musical traditions. One of the old grand pianos has been restored for concerts and the Barony concerts in the Yellow Room have become a major cultural event. The art gallery in the Wine Cellar contributes to carrying on the vivid interest in pictorial arts which has always been present at the Barony Rosendal. The cotter's holding, Træo, is property of the Manor, as well as The Stud Farm and The Women's House, which offers over night accomodation. Kvinnherad Post Chaise Society is situated at The Stud Farm, where they rent the old stables for the Norwegian ponies.
